For 2001 the postgraduate linguistics program at the University of Queensland would especially like to encourage a student with an Honours or MA degree in linguistics who is interested in pursuing research at PhD level on the Yanyuwa language of the Gulf of Carpentaria to apply for a PhD scholarship and stipend at the University of Queensland. The student would be jointly supervised by John Bradley, Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Archaeology, in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Mary Laughren, Department of English, in the Faculty of Arts. The Yanyuwa language and the culture and history of the Yanyula people is central to Bradley's current research interests. Bradley will make available to the student his extensive body of documentation of the language as well as that compiled by the late Jean Kirton. Also available are Ken Hale's Yanyuwa fieldnotes from the 1960s. The University of Queensland also holds the collection of tape recordings of Yanyuwa made by Elwyn Flint in the 1960s. On-going research into Yanyula music and dance is being conducted by Liz McKinlay, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at The University of Queensland. Mary Laughren who has been involved in the documentation of the Warlpiri language since 1975, is currently researching the relationship between the Ngumpin-Yapa languages of central Australia and the languages of the Gulf area, including Yanyuwa.
