Getting to Newcastle

NB: visitors from outside Australia may require a visa.


The main access from Sydney is via the M1 Pacific Motorway. The journey takes approximately two hours. Take the Newcastle exit and this will take you all the way into the CBD. Other major routes are the coastal Pacific Highway and the inland New England Highway from Brisbane. Renting a car is certainly an option for those wanting an easy two-hour drive from Sydney. Newcastle is part of the City Rail network centred on Sydney. There are frequent return services daily. Fast Countrylink trains connect Newcastle to Sydney, Brisbane and other country centres. See the City Rail web site for the timetable. You will need to look for the 'Central to Newcastle' times. Make sure that you are on an express train and get off in Newcastle at Civic station. The Crowne Hotel, The Clarendon and the Ibis are all within easy walking distance of the Civic station.


Newcastle Airport (Williamtown) is the major regional airport and is located 30 minutes from Newcastle city centre. The airport is served by QantasLink and has daily flights to and from Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne as well as some regional NSW centres. Rex provide return commuter flights daily to Sydney. Taxis cost approximately AUS$45 from the airport to the city.


Newcastle is serviced by coach companies throughout Australia. Connections to and from various locations are provided on a regular basis.
